- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded the University of California, Los Angeles $393,750 under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) on September 1, 2026, to investigate bidirectional influences between social media use and adolescent depression through analysis of frontoparietal network connectivity. The research leverages five waves of longitudinal data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (N>10,000, ages 13–18) to examine associations among...
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded $431,750 to Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Newark Division on August 20, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to investigate social media behaviors that generate social connections and mitigate distress in early adolescence. The recipient will conduct a multimodal research investigation examining how approach-oriented social media behaviors—such as reacting to and sharing content with peers—foster social...
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill $427,625 on August 15, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to investigate the relationship between social media use, rejection sensitivity, and depression in female adolescents. The research examines how social media characteristics—including network features and positive or negative online experiences—and endocrine contexts affect rejection sensitivity and depressive...
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded the University of Pittsburgh $458,433 on September 1, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to develop, refine, and validate a developmentally-tailored and ecologically-valid adolescent emotional faces stimulus set and examine the extent to which adolescents' socioaffective processing of these stimuli predicts unique variance in symptoms of anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and lifetime history of suicidal...
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded the University of California, San Diego $2.115 million on August 1, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to develop and evaluate a mobile health system delivering just-in-time adaptive interventions based on dialectical behavior therapy principles for young adults with comorbid major depressive disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and related anxiety conditions. The UNDERSTAND project...
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded the University of Massachusetts Medical School $612,425 on March 15, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to conduct longitudinal imaging research on visual discrimination and anxiety in children. The project investigates how high trait anxiety in children is associated with threat misattribution—the tendency to perceive nonthreatening stimuli, particularly faces, as threatening. The research focuses on the...
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded the University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. $405,505 on September 1, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to investigate how daily social media engagement influences mood and coping among socially disconnected adolescents in rural and low-resource areas. The research comprises two stages. Stage 1 will collect one month of passive mobile-use data from 20 rural adolescents ages 13–17 to derive preliminary...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) awarded $3.63 million under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to the Center for Innovative Public Health Research to investigate the bidirectional relationship between adolescent social media exposure and mental health outcomes. The four-year project, initiated September 10, 2025 and concluding September 9, 2029, will deliver a longitudinal research study tracking 2,000 adolescents aged 13-16...
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded Rutgers, The State University $100,228 on November 1, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to examine the short-term effects of adolescent social media experiences on suicidal ideation, with particular focus on the roles of identity exploration and functioning. - The National Institute of Mental Health awarded the University of Massachusetts Medical School $474,500 on August 1, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to investigate the relationship between puberty, interoceptive neural networks, and anxiety symptoms in adolescents. The research employs functional magnetic resonance imaging to characterize how pubertal changes to cortical body representation in primary somatosensory and insular cortices relate to...
The National Institute of Mental Health awarded the University of Pittsburgh $840,321 for a five-year Project Grant (R01MH145219) beginning September 1, 2026, to investigate the relationship between digital media use and social anxiety in adolescents under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242). The recipient will conduct a longitudinal study enrolling 175 adolescents ages 13–17 with varying levels of social anxiety to examine how digital experiences of social threat and reward influence anxiety symptoms. The study combines ecological momentary assessment over 16 days, a novel digital media rewind task that captures visually-cued ratings of social threat and reward during playback of digital media sessions, and neural assessments using the Chatroom Interact Task and a new task called Tangle simulating modern social media platforms. The research applies a differential susceptibility framework to identify which adolescents are most susceptible to harmful effects of digital media use and which aspects of digital interaction are most impactful on social anxiety. Work is performed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a period of performance through August 31, 2031.
