Project Grant R01HD122357
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center $682,848 on June 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate mitochondrial function and quality control in germ cell development and reproductive aging. The award funds basic biomedical research using a novel enforced mitophagy platform to modulate mitochondrial abundance and quality in vivo across specific...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded the University of Toledo $448,793 on September 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate spermatozoa head-kinking mechanics and their role in male fertility. The research addresses molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying human spermatozoa navigation and egg fertilization. The project will employ rabbits as a genetic model and high-resolution microscopy to...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $456,500 to The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center on June 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865). The award funds molecular characterization of human pregnancy-induced cervical epithelium through two research aims. First, the recipient will apply single-cell and spatial...
- This Project Grant award from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) provides $152,834 to the University of Toledo to study the composition of sperm striated columns and their role in sperm movement and zygote centrosome function. The goal is to identify biomarkers of the striated columns to enable future research on their contributions to male infertility...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston $688,009 on May 15, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate trophoblast differentiation and placental aging. The award funds research testing the hypothesis that precocious trophoblast differentiation leads to exhaustion of the trophoblast stem cell pool, triggering premature placental aging and...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded $481,658 to Baylor College of Medicine on July 1, 2026, to support research into signaling pathways in testicular descent and function under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865). The research addresses cryptorchidism (undescended testicles), a condition affecting 1–3 percent of full-term newborns. Despite surgical correction before age 2, nearly 50 percent of patients with...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded The University of Texas at San Antonio $124,590 on July 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to support research on the local regulation of signaling isoprenoids in gonad development. The funded research investigates how juvenile hormone signaling is spatiotemporally regulated during embryonic ovary and testis development in Drosophila melanogaster. The project...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Yale University $543,572 on August 15, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate the molecular mechanisms of sperm-immune recognition in the female reproductive tract. The research addresses how resident macrophages in the female reproductive tract selectively eliminate compromised sperm while permitting viable sperm to reach the egg. The project focuses on...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded $430,375 to the University of California Santa Cruz on August 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research Projects program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate the role of RNA-modifying enzymes in regulating totipotent gene expression during early embryonic development. The research explores how the putative RNA methyltransferase METTL7A1 regulates zygotic genome activation and totipotency in mouse...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded $149,190 to The Trustees of The University of Pennsylvania on January 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to determine the postfertilization regulatory functions of a sperm microRNA cluster. The research investigates how sperm microRNAs influence early embryonic development and mediate the paternal transmission of non-genetically inherited phenotypes. The project...
The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center $500,118 on August 15, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to conduct research on the molecular control of endoplasmic reticulum remodeling during spermiogenesis. The research investigates how spermatids compact the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), the largest intracellular organelle, during the morphological transformation into mature spermatozoa. The project focuses on a testis-enriched ER protein called tail-off (TOF) that promotes ER compaction. Preliminary data shows that TOF knockout male mice are infertile with malformed sperm lacking tails or containing excessive ER membranes at the neck region, and that a nonsense mutation in human TOF associated with male infertility fails to compact ER, suggesting TOF's conserved role in human spermiogenesis. The funded research will extend this preliminary work through a series of planned experiments. Work is performed in Dallas, Texas, with a period of performance running through May 31, 2031. This is a Project Grant, the standard investigator-initiated research award mechanism within NICHD's extramural research portfolio.
