Project Grant R01HD115923
- The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences awarded the University of Pennsylvania $622,659 on June 1, 2026, under the Medical Library Assistance program (CFDA 93.879) to develop causal ablation methods for comparative effectiveness research. The project develops an ablation framework that enables analysts to identify which assumptions underlying causal inference are necessary to reach informative conclusions in comparative effectiveness research. The work addresses three common...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia $795,088 on June 15, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to conduct a cluster randomized controlled trial evaluating doula support and healthcare navigation for mothers of preterm infants in neonatal intensive care units. The study, titled Postpartum Care in the NICU (PELICAN), addresses maternal postpartum mortality risk among...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Pennsylvania received a $446,875 Project Grant award from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865), effective August 15, 2025, through July 31, 2027. The project deliverables include the development and evaluation of a Disparities in Labor Outcomes Dashboard designed to address significant racial disparities in obstetric care. The...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded The Trustees of The University of Pennsylvania $149,190 on January 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research Projects program (CFDA 93.HDR) to elucidate the biochemical mechanisms of SCMH1, an accessory subunit of polycomb repressive complex 1, during cellular differentiation. The research investigates SCMH1's role in polycomb-mediated gene repression through RNA-binding and nuclear condensation....
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia $248,999 on September 2, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research Projects program (CFDA 93.865). The award funds research training to develop expertise in emotional and biobehavioral mechanisms of parent-infant emotional synchrony. The principal investigator will pursue advanced training in mother-infant electrocardiogram and electroencephalography...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia $356,000 on May 15, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to analyze disease trajectories of rare genomic variants contributing to childhood lesional brain disorders and epilepsies. The recipient will integrate genomic sequencing data from two Kids First cohorts—one focused on epilepsy and one on brain tumors—with longitudinal...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded The Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania $600,000 on August 15, 2026, for Project Grant R01HD120404 under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865). The award funds investigation of how DNA repeat evolution—transposable elements, telomeric satellites, and centromeric satellites—affects early mammalian embryonic development and genome function. The research uses mouse models to test...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $456,500 to The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center on June 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865). The award funds molecular characterization of human pregnancy-induced cervical epithelium through two research aims. First, the recipient will apply single-cell and spatial...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Thomas Jefferson University $438,910 on August 17, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to develop and pilot a group-based well-child care model that integrates maternal healthcare for mothers with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. The recipient will execute two primary aims. In Aim 1, the institution will conduct a user-centered design process including focus groups...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Pennsylvania State University (Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center) $1,324,709 on September 10, 2025, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to conduct direct measurement of Rh D sensitization following bleeding in pregnancy less than 12 weeks gestation. The research addresses the clinical utility of Rh immunoglobulin (RhIG) administration during early pregnancy...
The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded The Trustees of The University of Pennsylvania $683,352 on August 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to develop novel causal inference and machine learning methods and user-friendly software designed to reconcile conflicting results from randomized controlled trials. The project addresses the challenge that large, well-designed RCTs with near-identical protocols frequently produce conflicting results, hindering clinical decision-making and patient care. The recipient will develop transportability methods and software to evaluate the extent to which implementation differences across study sites—including label and distributional shifts of outcomes—explain conflicting trial results. The project will also develop methods to assess how imbalance of unmeasured drivers of treatment effect heterogeneity across sites, combined with outcome distributional shifts, induces conflicting results. The work draws on a perinatal health example: 17-alpha-hydroxyprogesterone caproate (17P) demonstrated clinical efficacy for reducing recurrent spontaneous preterm birth in an initial trial, received FDA accelerated approval, yet was withdrawn from the market after a confirmatory trial with an identical protocol produced null results in a different population. The award carries a period of performance from August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2031. Work is performed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The assistance type is a Project Grant.
