Project Grant R01DK148678
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $173,232 on May 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The award funds basic research into renal endothelial cell signaling in sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI) preceded by viral priming. The research examines how renal endothelial cells respond to poly(I:C), a synthetic analog of viral double-stranded...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $650,509 on August 20, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate the myeloid ferritin–CXCL3 axis as a driver of acute kidney injury (AKI) progression to chronic kidney disease. The research leverages novel transgenic mice with targeted deletion of ferritin genes in myeloid cells to determine whether myeloid...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $158,609 on April 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate resident memory T cells in kidney disease pathology during autoimmunity. The research addresses lupus nephritis, a kidney disease affecting over 50 percent of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. The project will identify the...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, a component of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $674,691 to the Trustees of Indiana University (doing business as Indiana University Indianapolis) on August 20, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The award funds research investigating alternative splicing of uromodulin (AS-UMOD) as a protective mechanism against...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the Veterans Medical Research Foundation of San Diego $383,098 on September 2, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The recipient will conduct research into kidney tubule dysfunction in APOL1-associated chronic kidney disease, with focus on developing and validating tubular biomarkers that capture kidney functions—nutrient reabsorption and toxin...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Vanderbilt University Medical Center $866,265 on May 13, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate non-canonical ephrin B2 receptor (EPHB2) signaling in acute kidney injury and its progression to chronic kidney disease. The research examines how EPHB2 and transforming growth factor beta signaling pathways contribute to kidney inflammation and...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Ann & Robert H Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago $164,580 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847, Project Grant K08DK147611) to investigate immune-mediated mechanisms of tubulointerstitial injury in childhood nephrotic syndrome. The award funds basic research characterizing how dendritic cells and related inflammatory pathways contribute...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The Johns Hopkins University $798,088 on August 21, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop and validate non-invasive predictive models for assessing acute tubular injury and interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy on kidney biopsy. The research leverages the Novel Approaches in the Investigation of Kidney Disease (NAIKID) study, an ongoing...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the Trustees of Indiana University $180,900 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847, Project Grant K23DK149459) to conduct mentored patient-oriented research on biomarker-guided early risk stratification for fluid imbalance and acute kidney injury in neonates. The research addresses neonatal fluid overload and acute kidney injury, complications...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) awarded a $237,750 Project Grant to the Trustees of Indiana University (Indiana University Indianapolis) under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) for the period September 15, 2025 through August 31, 2027. The award supports a rigorous qualitative research study examining nephrology practices' participation decisions and care model reforms...
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $743,278 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct research on the structural features of IgA1-containing immune complexes that drive kidney damage in IgA nephropathy (IGAN). The research will identify pathogenic glycoforms of galactose-deficient IgA1 (GD-IgA1) recognized by IgG autoantibodies to form nephritogenic immune complexes with complement C3 covalently attached to IgA and/or IgG. The project addresses a gap in understanding the mechanisms underlying formation of these complexes, which deposit in kidneys and cause progressive kidney failure in IGAN patients. The research employs a multidisciplinary team with combined expertise in biochemical, molecular, structural, and clinical studies, supported by clinical studies of human kidney-biopsy specimens and experimental in vitro and in vivo models of IGAN. Work is performed in Birmingham, Alabama, with performance extending through May 31, 2030. The award is a Project Grant, the standard NIH assistance type for research activities.
