Project Grant R01DK145495
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $687,654 on August 5, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop dynamic contrast-enhanced ultrasound (DCEUS) as a radiation-free alternative to nuclear medicine diuretic renography for diagnosing upper urinary tract obstruction. The research addresses limitations of current diagnostic methods, which expose...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $777,956 on March 1, 2026, under CFDA 93.847 (Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research) to develop computer vision and machine learning methods for detecting pre-cancerous dysplasia in inflammatory bowel disease patients during colonoscopy and histologic examination. Current detection of dysplasia in IBD patients is hampered by flat, irregular lesions that...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $651,082 to Regents of the University of Michigan on June 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The award funds research investigating how human intestinal stem cells reactivate developmental gene expression programs during injury repair and regeneration. The project tests...
- The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $149,264 on March 26, 2026, under the Discovery and Applied Research for Technological Innovations to Improve Human Health program (CFDA 93.286) to develop magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) technology for myocardial tissue characterization in patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices. The project addresses the clinical underutilization of cardiac MRI in CIED...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), a component of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $1,519,835 on September 24, 2025, to test a novel weight navigation program designed to overcome multilevel barriers to obesity treatment in primary care settings. The project grant (R01DK139094) supports research under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Houston System $167,696 on August 27, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop intelligent bioelectronic implants for diagnosis and neuromodulation of neurogenic bladder dysfunction. The award funds research to address urological dysfunction following spinal cord injury, particularly neurogenic bladder and detrusor sphincter...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, an institute within the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $690,854 on February 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The award funds research to identify molecular and genetic mechanisms that determine and maintain kidney epithelial cell states in normal physiology and in...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The Washington University $766,951 on April 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop and validate imaging biomarkers for assessing high-risk deceased donor kidneys slated for transplantation. The project addresses kidney shortage by improving the accuracy of kidney quality assessment, reducing the approximately 2,500 procured kidneys discarded...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Massachusetts General Hospital $835,752 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop molecular magnetic resonance imaging techniques for non-invasive assessment of inflammatory activity in inflammatory bowel disease. The project aims to create a rapid, sensitive imaging test that evaluates intestinal inflammation anywhere in the...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $672,600 on August 25, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate the neural circuits that control glucose mobilization through the hypothalamus. The project, R01DK143970, will identify distinct populations of dorsomedial ventromedial nucleus neurons and determine how specific neural subtypes coordinate...
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded $762,423 to the Regents of the University of Michigan on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop and optimize quantitative magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) technology for non-invasive assessment of bladder wall tissue characteristics in neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction. The research addresses limitations of current invasive urodynamic studies used to risk-stratify patients with spinal cord injury, which account for over 80 percent of neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction cases. MRF will enable simultaneous, high-resolution three-dimensional quantitative mapping of tissue properties including T1 relaxation time to assess chronic inflammation and fibrosis, T2 to evaluate acute inflammation and edema, and extracellular volume, supporting earlier intervention and personalized management informed by discrete imaging biomarkers. The work will be performed at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with a period of performance from September 1, 2026, through May 31, 2030.
