Project Grant R01DK144115
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $298,000 on August 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct a pilot trial evaluating a scalable behavioral intervention for weight loss maintenance after patients discontinue GLP-1 receptor agonists and anti-obesity medications. The study will enroll 64 participants in a randomized factorial design to assess a...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Arkansas Colleges of Health Education $646,459 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct research on novel mechanisms promoting energy intake compensation in response to aerobic and resistance exercise. The research addresses how individuals compensate for energy expended during exercise by increasing food intake, thereby limiting weight...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Virginia $744,590 on August 21, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct a factorial experiment optimizing behavioral lifestyle intervention for adults prescribed next-generation anti-obesity medications. The project will recruit 608 adults with obesity or overweight with weight-related comorbidity who are prescribed second-generation...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Duke University $790,119 on August 26, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate how memory formation in adipose tissue influences metabolic outcomes in obesity. The project, titled "Establishing Memory in Adipose Tissue Influences Future Metabolic Outcomes in Obesity," examines the mechanisms that drive divergent remodeling of white...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $173,232 on May 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The award funds basic research into renal endothelial cell signaling in sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI) preceded by viral priming. The research examines how renal endothelial cells respond to poly(I:C), a synthetic analog of viral double-stranded...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $1.934 million on March 4, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct a 10-year follow-up study of children born to mothers who participated in the MOMPOD (Medical Optimization and Management of Pregnancies with Overt Type 2 Diabetes) trial. The award funds enrollment and assessment of approximately 462 children...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Indiana University Indianapolis $179,551 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to optimize the delivery of obesity treatment through facilitated assessment and selection strategies. The recipient will assess patterns and predictors of individual, combined, and sequential obesity treatment utilization in a statewide cohort; examine patient-,...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded New York University a Project Grant of $861,091 on September 4, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The recipient will conduct neuroimaging and computational modeling research to identify the neural and decision-making mechanisms underlying loss-of-control eating and obesity. The research applies a novel framework positing that failures in self-control...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), a component of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $1,519,835 on September 24, 2025, to test a novel weight navigation program designed to overcome multilevel barriers to obesity treatment in primary care settings. The project grant (R01DK139094) supports research under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Kansas Medical Center Research Institute, Inc. $2,327,634 on September 15, 2025, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate changes in body composition and muscle mass in adults receiving anti-obesity medications. The research examines how nutrient-stimulated hormone receptor agonist (NUSH-RA) therapies—including GIP and GLP-1 receptor...
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $743,243 on August 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct a sequential multiple assignment randomized trial optimizing intensive behavioral therapy for obesity in adults aged 50 to 75 years. The trial will enroll 250 adults with obesity to determine the optimal first-line diet strategy—high-protein versus standard-protein—and adherence-promoting augmentation strategy—protein supplements versus supervised resistance exercise training—for achieving clinically important weight loss while preserving skeletal muscle. Participants will receive 16 weeks of weekly group-based intensive behavioral therapy followed by 36 weeks of monthly maintenance sessions. The study addresses the clinical challenge that aging adults with obesity face concurrent risk of sarcopenia and cardiometabolic disease; current intensive behavioral therapy approaches inadequately promote adherence to high-protein diets and resistance exercise, both protective against muscle loss during weight reduction. Research will be performed in Birmingham, Alabama. The period of performance runs through May 31, 2031. This is a Project Grant award under the assistance type classification.
