The University of Alabama at Birmingham received a $298,000 Project Grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847), awarded August 1, 2026, with completion targeted for July 31, 2029. This pilot trial delivers a multi-component behavioral intervention program designed to support weight loss maintenance (WLM) after patients discontinue GLP-1 receptor agonists and anti-obesity medications (AOMs). The program addresses post-medication weight regain by targeting appetite resurgence, metabolic inflexibility, and suboptimal mindstate through structured eating, physical activity, and mind-based practices grounded in a food, physical activity, and mind as medicine conceptual model. The intervention comprises a standardized 10-week WLM program with continued behavioral support through six months, including weekly virtual group sessions and access to a peer support community. Sixty-four participants will be randomized in a factorial design to receive varying combinations of three candidate support components: medically tailored meals, YMCA access, and the SKY meditation program. The study will assess feasibility, acceptability, participant perceptions, and preliminary effects on behavioral outcomes including weight, dietary intake, physical activity, and engagement in mind-based practices through digital tools and in-person measurements. This pilot work is embedded in preparation for a larger multiphase optimization trial.Federal Grant Award Summary
