This Project Grant award of $804,478 from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121), will support research to generate a single-cell atlas of human craniofacial development and use evolutionary analysis to identify enhancers critical for midface development. The goal is to improve understanding of the genetic basis of midface defects, including clefts of the lip and palate, which can substantially impact breathing, feeding, speech, and social connection in affected children. The research will be conducted by The Regents of the University of California, operating as Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, over the award period from July 1, 2025 to March 31, 2030. The project aims to provide a detailed, cell type-resolved map of the enhancer landscape during human midface development and validate key enhancers using transgenic mouse models to understand their impact on craniofacial morphology.
