The federal Project Grant award R01DA059457, provided by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279), will support a $1,322,026 community-based, longitudinal, mixed-methods study to investigate the growing crisis of injection-related wounds and skin and soft tissue infections (IWSTIs) among people who inject drugs (PWID) in North Carolina. The study, led by Principal Investigator Jon Zibbell, aims to observe, examine, and typologize IWSTIs, as well as examine associations between risk factors and IWSTI incidence within a longitudinal cohort of 450 PWID. The project will involve targeted sampling, ethnographic interviews, community-based drug checking, and respondent-driven sampling to gather data and characterize the etiology and features of IWSTIs, including the prevalence of the emerging threat of xylazine contamination in the illicit drug supply. This research is intended to inform public health responses to the growing crisis of novel IWSTIs among PWID. The project will also include a $312,026 sub-award to the non-profit Heluna Health to provide fiscal, administrative, and human resource support services for the study.
