Project Grant R01AG109115
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $116,079 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to assess how multilevel life course socioeconomic conditions relate to disparities in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The project examines socioeconomic trajectories at both individual and neighborhood levels in relation to cognitive decline, dementia incidence, and brain health indicators including structural magnetic...
- The National Institute on Aging, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $779,211 on September 2, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate the health, functional, and financial impacts of Medicaid disenrollment on adults ages 50-64 in Michigan. The research team will conduct a longitudinal two-wave survey of Michigan Medicaid enrollees ages 50-64 to evaluate how disenrollment affects insurance coverage,...
- The National Institute on Aging, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded $298,419 to the Regents of the University of Michigan on February 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866, Assistance Listing Project Grant R01AG097771). The recipient will develop advanced statistical and computational methods for analyzing immune cell data to enhance understanding of the immune system's role in aging and age-related diseases. The project addresses analytical...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Michigan Regents $128,520 on July 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to assess how the built environment influences sensory health outcomes in aging populations. The recipient will conduct secondary data analysis using the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) to identify associations between air quality exposure and hearing, dual sensory loss, and olfaction. The research will evaluate whether the built...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $654,999 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to assess cognitive functioning in the National Monitoring the Future (MTF) Panel Study. The award funds the addition of web-based cognitive measures to the MTF Panel, a nationally representative longitudinal study of high school seniors followed since 1975. The cognitive measures—assessing memory, numeracy, executive functioning, word...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $1,703,843 on April 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to generate prospective environmental chemical exposure data from stored biospecimens in the Health and Retirement Study cohort and examine associations between chemical and social exposures and Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). The project performs state-of-the-art non-targeted analysis to measure chemical levels...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $284,108 on January 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate how mechanical changes in the aging brain affect microglial function and Alzheimer's disease progression. The project explores the relationship between age-related mechanical alterations in brain tissue—specifically decreased stiffness and increased viscoelasticity resulting from reduced tissue connectivity—and microglial...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $131,842 on February 22, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866, Assistance Listing Project Grant F31AG094300). The recipient will use the funding to identify global rejuvenation mechanisms in tissues that reverse age-related phenotypes in planarians. The research involves developing and optimizing EX-SCOPE, a high-resolution spatial transcriptomic technology that integrates expansion microscopy and...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded $1.669 million to American Institutes For Research In The Behavioral Sciences on September 15, 2025, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to develop a comprehensive residential address history for Project Talent participants and geocode addresses to support research on neighborhood characteristics and cognitive health outcomes related to Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The project will identify Project Talent participants in the...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $1,342,546 on September 30, 2025, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to examine how Medicare's hospital wage index policy affects patient access, hospital care quality, staffing, and service composition for older Medicare beneficiaries. The research uses 100% Medicare claims and wage index data to conduct econometric analyses of three dimensions: financial effects, staffing and quality and health...
The National Institute on Aging awarded Regents of the University of Michigan $2.114 million on September 2, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to expand and enhance the National Neighborhood Data Archive (NANDA), a national repository of contextual measures designed for integration into aging research workflows and linkages with longitudinal studies. The award funds six specific aims. Three aims support NANDA's data infrastructure: administrative activities, data creation and dissemination activities, and methodological innovation with spatially and temporally linked data. Three research aims examine how neighborhood-level social and environmental factors contribute to respiratory illness among older adults, including identifying high- and low-burden respiratory illness neighborhoods across the United States, determining the optimal spatial scale that captures heterogeneity in illness burden across rural and urban contexts and transmission pathways, and assessing whether residence in high-burden neighborhoods increases the risk of hospitalization or mortality, with focus on the modifying role of immune aging using linked data from the Health and Retirement Study. The award provides a nationally reproducible, publicly available data resource on environmental factors for older adult health. Work is performed at Ann Arbor, Michigan, with a period of performance extending from September 2, 2026, to June 30, 2031.
