The grant supports a research project titled "Personal Values in Dementia Experience, Caregiving, and Research" that aims to examine how changes in personal values and self-narratives among people with different dementia syndromes impact caregivers and caregiving...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Institute on Aging (NIA) awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $460,283 through the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct a two-year research project from September 1, 2025 through August 31, 2027. This Project Grant supports biomedical research directed toward understanding the aging process and age-related diseases, with the funded research examining the role of reverse electron transport (RET) inhibition in...
- The National Institute of Nursing Research awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $836,590 on June 23, 2026, under the Nursing Research program (CFDA 93.361) to support research on the long-term impacts and mechanisms of financial programming on mental health of young adults. The project extends the BEEM Study, a randomized wait-list-controlled trial examining the impact of economic intervention—including cash payments and opt-in financial mentoring—on physical,...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded $648,930 to the Regents of the University of California, doing business as University of California, Berkeley, on August 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to develop human stem cell-based microphysiological systems for aging research. The recipient will create a novel human aging-on-a-chip platform integrating fat and liver tissues derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and microfluidics using serum from young...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the President and Fellows of Harvard College $683,924 on February 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct research on patient outcomes and healthcare utilization in U.S. hospices following private equity acquisition. The research examines how private equity acquisition affects hospice patient selection, length of stay, service utilization, live discharge rates, and Medicare spending. The study uses a quasi-experimental approach...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded New York University $3.053 million on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct longitudinal research on caregiving networks and their consequences among adults ages 85 and older. The award funds the ARIC CARES study, embedded within the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study cohort. The research will characterize care ecosystems and relational coordination (teamwork) among family caregivers, paid caregivers, and...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Institute on Aging (NIA) awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $3.3 million through the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) on September 15, 2025, for a four-year project period concluding September 14, 2029. This renewal grant (R01AG059677) funds a 40-year longitudinal follow-up study of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Growth and Health Study (NGHS) cohort, examining the relationship between early life...
The National Institute on Aging awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $736,432 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate how healthcare financialization shapes goal-concordant serious illness care in older adults. The recipient will conduct an ethnographic interview study across six hospital sites—two academic medical centers and four affiliated hospitals in two geographic regions—to document mechanisms by which financialization affects the delivery of serious illness care aligned with patient preferences and values. The study will encompass 180 in-depth interviews examining how hospitals balance financial pressures with facilitating goal-concordant care. The work will also elicit physicians' perspectives on their ability to provide goal-concordant care at private equity-owned hospitals. Using findings from this research, the recipient will develop institution-level strategies and feasible, acceptable hospital-level policies to improve goal-concordant serious illness care within increasingly financialized health systems. Performance occurs in San Francisco, California. The period of performance runs through May 31, 2031. This is a Project Grant, the standard assistance type for individual research projects under NIA's Aging Research program.
