Project Grant R01AG094904
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Rochester Institute of Technology $125,650 on September 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to develop and evaluate a smartphone-based digital coaching system for fall prevention in stroke survivors. The project delivers three core products: a prototype digital coaching application providing personalized reminders, exercise prompts, and safety guidance co-designed with stroke survivors, caregivers, and physical therapists; pilot...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Maryland, Baltimore $649,688 on May 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to develop microinstrumented cortical organoid therapy for chronic stroke treatment. The award funds research on brain organoid transplantation combined with flexible bioelectronic monitoring to enable real-time electrophysiology and intravital multiphoton imaging of implanted organoids in stroke-damaged adult brain tissue. Current stroke...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Hebrew Rehabilitation Center $318,000 on August 18, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct a pilot study of home-based dual-task gait assessment in older adults at risk of dementia. The project will recruit 60 ambulatory adults aged 65 and older—30 with mild cognitive impairment and 30 age- and sex-matched controls—to use a smartphone-based gait application for daily assessments in their homes over a two-week baseline period,...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded The University of Chicago $597,239 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to support investigation of inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) utilization and outcomes for older adult patients with and without Alzheimer's disease or other dementias (ADRD). The research examines comparative value and appropriateness of care delivery across post-acute care settings, specifically comparing higher-cost IRF care—which provides acute...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of California Irvine $408,504 on February 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to develop an integrated, wearable hemodynamic monitoring platform for early detection and management of hemorrhage in trauma patients. The project, titled "Patch for Hemodynamic and Hemorrhage Monitoring" (R21AG081893), aims to develop and validate IMOMS (Integrated Multimodal Monitoring System), which integrates...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Mayo Clinic $729,906 on September 3, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate the neurobiological substrates of falls in cognitively unimpaired older adults. The research uses dual-task paradigms that simultaneously engage motor and cognitive brain systems to characterize subclinical gait impairment patterns among cognitively unimpaired individuals who experience falls. The study assesses how gait impairment relates to...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Colorado-Denver $793,312 under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) on April 1, 2026, to conduct feasibility and preliminary efficacy research on the Safe Transfers and Mobility Program (STAMP), a supplemental mobility intervention for skilled nursing facility patients. STAMP engages patients in walking and functional transfers—including bed mobility, sit-to-stands, and wheelchair transfers—throughout the day using trained mobility...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Rush University Medical Center $656,503 under CFDA 93.866 (Aging Research) on September 1, 2026, to develop and validate an in-vivo MRI-based classifier for detecting cerebral amyloid angiopathy in community-dwelling older adults. The project combines multimodal MRI imaging with neuropathological data to create a machine-learning classifier capable of identifying cerebral amyloid angiopathy—a common age-related pathology affecting up to 80 percent of older...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Aster Labs, Inc. $499,943 on September 15, 2025, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to design and construct a wearable gait-monitoring device for continuous home-based assessment of health decline in Black adults with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The device will measure gait patterns including stride and speed throughout the day to provide clinicians and caregivers with early indication of functional decline and disease...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York $3.356 million on September 2, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to identify distinct multidimensional risk profiles for loneliness in stroke survivors during the first year after stroke. The research will examine how risk factors cluster across individual, interpersonal, and community levels to create distinct loneliness profiles among stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA)...
The National Institute on Aging awarded $691,763 to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (doing business as Shirley Ryan AbilityLab) on August 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to evaluate the effectiveness of a wearable hip airbag equipped with a stroke-specific pre-impact fall detection algorithm in older adults with stroke. The project will assess whether the wearable airbag accurately deploys during falls, reduces hip injuries, decreases fear of falling, and increases community ambulation in stroke survivors. The research will compare the performance of stroke-specific and generalized fall detection algorithms in detecting real-world falls in the community and deploying airbags. The study will recruit 44 older adults aged 65 to 90 with a history of stroke and falls in a community-based crossover trial. Over 95 percent of the approximately 300,000 annual hip fractures in the United States result from falls, and up to 70 percent of older adults with a history of stroke experience multiple falls yearly; over half of fall-related bone fractures in the stroke population occur at the hip. The period of performance extends from August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2031. Work is performed in Chicago, Illinois.
