Project Grant R01AG084437
- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded a $750,000 Project Grant under the Trans-NIH Research Support program (CFDA 93.310) to Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) to fund research on the link between trained immunity, immune complexes, and aging-related conditions in people living with HIV (PLWH). The 5-year project aims to investigate how chronic inflammation driven by the persistent HIV reservoir and co-infections like...
- This Project Grant from the National Institutes of Health National Institute on Aging provided $227,436.88 to study the role of neutrophils in the age-driven decline of anti-pneumococcal vaccine responses. The Research Foundation for the State University of New York served as the awardee and Sponsored Projects Services as the vendor to carry out the research from June 15, 2021 to September 29, 2021. The objectives of the research were to test the role of neutrophils as effectors in the decline...
- This $527,129 Project Grant award from the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 Aging Research) supports research to identify biomarkers and develop novel strategies to prevent or treat inflammation-associated comorbidities in people living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy. The award recipient, Northwestern University, will conduct research to examine how glycomic alterations in circulating IgGs may contribute to HIV-associated inflammation and identify these alterations as potential...
- This federal Project Grant award of $127,019.00 from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866), aims to investigate how aging impacts T follicular helper cells (TFH) and their role in the decline of vaccine-induced antibody responses in older adults. The research plan will use a systems immunology approach to quantify age-associated changes in TFH heterogeneity within secondary lymphoid organs, hypothesizing that TFH accumulate epigenetic changes...
- The National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded a $2.3 million Project Grant to the University of California, Davis to fund research targeting CD4 T follicular helper cells for enhancing HIV vaccine-induced humoral immunity. The two-year award, issued on May 12, 2021 under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855), will support preclinical studies in rhesus macaques to better understand the immunological mechanisms...
- This Project Grant award of $891,410 from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research (CFDA 93.855) program supports research to develop a personalized therapeutic vaccine to boost autologous neutralizing antibodies for HIV control without antiretroviral therapy. The goal is to enhance the breadth and potency of individuals' own antibody responses against HIV in order to achieve durable viral control after treatment...
- This Project Grant award of $775,187 from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) supports research to understand the impact of systemic immunosuppression on antibody generation and effector functions after vaccination against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in immunosuppressed persons (ISPs). The project will compare antibody responses to novel RSV vaccines in a national observational cohort of ISPs versus healthy participants, aiming to inform improved vaccine...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) awarded a $1,275,484 Cooperative Agreement titled "An Early Life Multivalent Immunization Strategy for Induction of Neutralization Breadth" to the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. The project aims to develop an early life HIV immunization strategy incorporating multivalent HIV envelope immunogens to drive efficient priming and maturation of B cell responses towards broad neutralization. The 5-year project...
- This Project Grant award from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) provides $1,550,462 to support a 5-year cross-sectional, longitudinal, and observational study investigating the impact of Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk genes, with a focus on APOE E4, on brain function in older Black/African American individuals living with HIV. The project aims to enroll 120 participants with HIV (60 with and 60 without the APOE E4 allele) and 80 demographically...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) awarded a $148,880 Project Grant under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Inc. The grant aims to investigate the mechanistic drivers behind impaired B cell response to influenza A virus (IAV) vaccination under conditions of obesity. Key research objectives include: Uncovering defects in the cellular and genetic machinery of germinal center reactions that...
VACCINE IMMUNITY AND INFLAMMATION IN THE AGING PERSON LIVING WITH HIV - PERSONS LIVING WITH HIV (PLWH) ARE AT INCREASED RISK OF CHRONIC INFLAMMATION AND THE ASSOCIATED ADVERSE HEALTH OUTCOMES. THERE IS CONSIDERABLE EVIDENCE THAT CHRONIC INFLAMMATORY CONDITIONS LIKE METABOLIC DISEASE AND AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH WEAKENED VACCINE RESPONSES AND EXISTING VACCINE STUDIES IN PLWH DO NOT ADEQUATELY SAMPLE OLDER INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE DISPROPORTIONATELY AFFECTED BY THIS "INFLAMMAGING." WE HYPOTHESIZE THE EFFECT OF AGE ON POOR VACCINE RESPONSES IS GREATER AMONG PLWH GIVEN THE ADDITIONAL BURDENS OF HIV DRIVEN INFLAMMATION. THE OVERALL PROJECT GOAL IS TO EXAMINE THIS PREMISE BY MEASURING THE IMPACT OF HIV STATUS, AGE, AND CHRONIC IMMUNE ACTIVATION ON CONJUGATE PNEUMOCOCCAL VACCINE RESPONSES. WE WILL STUDY ACUTE (30 DAY) AND LONGER-TERM (2 YEAR) IMMUNE RESPONSES FOLLOWING PCV20 VACCINATION, AMONG A COHORT OF PARTICIPANTS INCLUDING 4 GROUPS: A) OLDER PLWH, AGE 50 (N=100), B) OLDER HIV UNINFECTED CONTROLS, AGE 50 (N=50), C) YOUNGER PLWH, AGE
