Project Grant R01AA033241
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded the University of Pittsburgh $903,936 on September 20, 2025, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to investigate mechanisms of alcohol's effects on prefrontal cortex circuits, with performance through July 31, 2030, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The research examines how vasoactive intestinal peptide–expressing inhibitory interneurons (VIP-INs) in the prefrontal cortex modulate drinking behavior and affective changes in...
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded the University of Pittsburgh $158,378 on February 4, 2027, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to investigate the role of the anterior insular cortex in decision making under reward versus punishment conflict. The project examines how dysfunction in anterior insula activity may underlie maladaptive decision making in alcohol use disorder, particularly persistent ethanol drinking despite negative consequences. The...
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded the University of Pittsburgh $700,134 on June 15, 2026, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to conduct a longitudinal study tracking the development of alcohol tolerance from the onset of regular drinking in young adults. The research will recruit 300 eighteen- to nineteen-year-olds who drink at low-risk levels and show no DSM-related tolerance symptoms, oversampled for risk factors associated with problematic alcohol...
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded the University of Pittsburgh $628,080 under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) on May 1, 2026. This Project Grant (R01AA032487) funds a five-year investigation into whether a hyperactive nociceptin opioid peptide receptor (NOP) system drives relapse in heavy drinking alcohol use disorder (AUD) subjects, using positron emission tomography imaging with [11C]NOP-1A radiotracer and hydrocortisone challenge protocols. Prior...
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded The Rand Corporation $731,345 on September 1, 2026, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to implement and evaluate AWARE, a brief group counseling intervention addressing hazardous alcohol use and sexual risk behaviors among young adults experiencing homelessness. The project will conduct a hybrid type 1 effectiveness-implementation study in partnership with three drop-in centers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The work...
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded Auburn University $629,828 on September 20, 2025, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to conduct a multimodal assessment of neural, neuroendocrine, and immune responses to alcohol cues in binge drinkers across laboratory and real-world settings through August 31, 2030. The research examines neurobiological factors—neural activation, cortisol dysregulation, interleukin-6 elevation, and craving responses—as components...
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded Trustees of Boston University $580,556 on May 1, 2026, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to investigate the role of pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) in heavy alcohol drinking and associated anxiety-like behavior. The recipient will conduct mechanistic research using animal models of heavy alcohol drinking combined with pharmacological, molecular, and viral approaches to test whether the...
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee $413,383 on July 16, 2026, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to conduct a meta-analytic structural equation modeling study examining mechanisms of parenting on adolescent alcohol use. The recipient will conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of empirical studies targeting U.S. adolescents aged 10 to 18, synthesizing evidence on the influence of alcohol-specific parenting...
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded Research Triangle Institute $1,411,804 on September 20, 2025, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to conduct a hybrid implementation effectiveness cluster-randomized trial of Better Informed Parents Keeping Adolescents Safe from Alcohol (BIPAS), a mobile-delivered digital intervention designed to help parents prevent early-onset alcohol use in children. The study will expand BIPAS reach by translating the intervention...
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded Weill Medical College of Cornell University $591,468 on September 1, 2026, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to conduct longitudinal neuroimaging analysis identifying neural risk factors for drinking onset in young adulthood. The recipient will apply machine learning analysis to nine years of longitudinal neuroimaging, behavioral, and neuropsychological data from 466 adolescents (baseline ages 12–18 years) enrolled in...
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded the University of Pittsburgh $711,838 on August 3, 2026, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to conduct research identifying shared and unique mechanisms driving alcohol and eating cognitions and behaviors in early to middle adolescence through a longitudinal study titled Project READY (Research on Eating and Alcohol Development in Youth). The research examines how problematic alcohol use and binge-type eating frequently co-occur and share common features in adolescence, a developmental period characterized by increased risk-taking behavior, complex emotional experiences, growing peer importance, and non-parallel brain maturation in regions governing self-regulation and reward processing. The study applies the Acquired Preparedness model, investigating how dispositional impulsive characteristics and outcome expectancies shape trajectories of both behaviors. The work directly addresses gaps in existing literature, which has focused predominantly on college-aged samples after both behaviors have become established, by examining shared and unique risk mechanisms in younger adolescents to support development of transdiagnostic prevention and early intervention programs as well as behavior-specific interventions. Performance occurs in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a period of performance extending from August 3, 2026, through April 30, 2031. This is a Project Grant, the standard investigator-initiated research award mechanism under NIAAA's alcohol research portfolio.
