The award funds adaptation and pilot testing of the Navigation for Prioritized Alcohol Treatment After Hospitalization (NAVPATH) intervention, which...
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded the University of Colorado-Denver $191,592 on August 19, 2026, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to support a five-year mentored research project on enhancing emergency department care for alcohol use disorder. Dr. Jacob Lebin will develop and test an electronic health record-embedded clinical decision support tool designed to improve identification and treatment of alcohol use disorder in emergency department...
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded the Regents of the University of Colorado, doing business as University of Colorado-Denver, $1,162,583 on September 10, 2025, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to conduct research combining laboratory-based pain induction and ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods to examine age-related differences in the relationship between alcohol use, pain, and inflammation. The research tests two hypotheses: that pain...
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) awarded a $3.23 million Project Grant to The Regents of the University of Colorado (University of Colorado-Denver) on September 20, 2025, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273). This four-year research project, concluding August 31, 2029, will investigate the effects of full-spectrum cannabidiol (CBD) on alcohol consumption and alcohol use disorder (AUD) phenotypes to inform precision medicine approaches. The research...
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded the University of Colorado-Denver $189,532 on August 19, 2026, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to develop and test a peer-narrated video decision aid for alcohol treatment tailored to intensive care unit survivors with alcohol use disorder. The award funds a five-year career development project (K23) led by Dr. Kelsey Hills-Dunlap. The research addresses a gap identified in prior work: ICU survivors with alcohol use...
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded Trustees of Boston University $580,556 on May 1, 2026, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to investigate the role of pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) in heavy alcohol drinking and associated anxiety-like behavior. The recipient will conduct mechanistic research using animal models of heavy alcohol drinking combined with pharmacological, molecular, and viral approaches to test whether the...
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York $723,453 on July 10, 2026, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to conduct the Prenatal Alcohol Gene-by-Exposure (PAGE) Study, examining the roles of maternal-child genetic profiles in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. The study will perform whole-genome sequencing on both mothers and children, along with methylomic, transcriptomic, and phenotypic analysis to...
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded Duke University $2,725,992 under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) on September 1, 2026, to assess the impact of three employer-sponsored strategies on alcohol use disorder (AUD) detection, treatment, and health outcomes among working-age adults with private insurance. The project will evaluate whether expanding clinician provider networks, reducing out-of-pocket financial barriers to care, and implementing...
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded the University of Florida $1,121,211 on September 15, 2025, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to investigate neurocognitive mechanisms of resilience to alcohol use disorder in individuals with family history of AUD. The research combines observational and experimental methods to establish how attentional ability protects against alcohol use disorder development in at-risk individuals. Prior cross-sectional analysis...
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded The Regents of the University of Colorado, doing business as University of Colorado-Denver, $587,958 on August 10, 2026, under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to conduct a longitudinal sibling-comparison study of alcohol use disorder and co-occurring externalizing problems in high-risk individuals. The research follows 559 mid-adulthood participants with high prevalence of alcohol use disorder (67%), arrest history for antisocial behavior (50%), and co-occurring substance use disorders (cannabis 44%, amphetamine 16%, cocaine 16%, opioid 8%) across a fourth assessment wave spanning adolescence through mid-adulthood. The sibling-comparison design controls for familial confounds while investigating alcohol use as a cause versus consequence of psychiatric symptoms, antisocial behavior, and other substance use disorders, and whether comorbid conditions exacerbate mental and physical health effects of persistent alcohol use disorder. Performance occurs in Aurora, Colorado, with a period of performance from August 10, 2026, through May 31, 2031. The award is a Project Grant, the assistance type standard for NIAAA research funding under this program.
