This Project Grant award of $1,158,934.00 from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273), will fund research to understand the mechanisms of mitochondrial dynamics, quality control, and mitochondrial DNA-mediated inflammation in alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). The key objectives are to investigate how chronically accumulated megamitochondria in the liver promote the release of mitochondrial DNA and activation of the cGAS-STING innate immune pathway, leading to alcohol-induced liver injury and tumorigenesis. The research aims to identify novel mechanisms regulating mitochondrial homeostasis that could inform new therapeutic approaches for ALD by targeting mitochondrial function. The award period runs from August 20, 2024 to May 31, 2029 and the work will be conducted by the University of Kansas Medical Center Research Institute, Inc.
