Description
CIA is located within the city of haines, at the north end of the inside passage in southeast alaska. Haines is 70 air miles north of juneau and 250 road miles southwest of whitehorse, yukon territory, canada. The remote community has an estimated population of 1,905. Cias mission is to integrate chilkoot culture, values, and beliefs into daily life and work to improve the quality of life for our members and our community. The internet plays a vital and increasingly central role in how americans work, study, obtain healthcare, and take part in our democracy. Rural individuals can be disenfranchised by lack of affordable broadband service. For this reason, CIA has partnered with alaska power & telephone (AP & t) to create an affordable broadband program that will provide no-cost, broadband serviceand prevent disconnection of existing broadband serviceusing an ntia tribal broadband connectivity program grant (funding opportunity number ntia-ICG-tbcpo-2023-2008098) in order to promote the social and economic health and well-being of their tribal citizens and native american, alaska native and/or native hawaiian community members. CIA is seeking $2,454,570. This program will provide broadband education, awareness, training, access, and support, and will focus on digital skills and workforce capacity in order to enable the work initiated by the project to continue beyond the award period to the extent possible.
