About this award
The Sealaska Heritage Institute received a $115,083 Project Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Native American and Native Hawaiian Library Services (NANH-L) program (CFDA 45.311) to complete the "Tlingit Macbeth: Celebrating Indigenous Films" project. The project will allow Sealaska Heritage Institute staff to edit raw footage of the 2007 all-Native cast performance of the play "Tlingit Macbeth" (primarily in the Tlingit language) into a feature film. The completed film will premiere at Celebration 2024 as the main feature of a film festival, and then be made available to the public on DVD. The project will celebrate the unique contributions of the Alaska Native community in creating the Tlingit Macbeth production and honor the memory of key contributors like translator Johnny Marks. It will also debut a juried film show component at the festival to highlight Native filmmakers, with the winning short films receiving awards.
