About this award

The Polynesian Voyaging Society received a $500,000 Project Grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Congressionally Identified Awards and Projects program (CFDA 11.469) to implement the "Access to Indigenous Knowledge and Sharing of Indigenous Knowledge with Proper Protocols" project. The project aims to inspire and empower young leaders and communities in Hawaii and beyond to address climate resilience through the perpetuation and sharing of traditional wayfinding and seafaring knowledge. The funding will be used to develop protocols for documenting indigenous knowledge and make it available on the Waa Honua website for educators, scientists, and others to incorporate into climate resilience efforts. Through education and storytelling, the project will share the Polynesian voyaging tradition of navigating the Pacific using only natural cues, reminding participants of their responsibility to care for the ocean and its ecosystems.
