About this award
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded $477,457 in federal funding to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources on October 1, 2025, under the Coastal Zone Management Estuarine Research Reserves program (CFDA 11.420). The funded activities include engaging an architectural firm to produce detailed design specifications, construction documents, and cost estimates for facility upgrades that incorporate efficiency and sustainable design features to modernize the visitor center and enhance the user experience for both visitors and staff.
As a component of the RPP development, the architectural firm will also coordinate with an exhibit designer to create conceptual designs for new, theme-based exhibits and signage that communicate the reserve's priority issues and key messages while ensuring accessibility for individuals with cognitive, physical, or other challenges. The renovation project plan will build upon existing conceptual designs contained within the facility master plan and will result in deliverable documents necessary to guide the subsequent implementation phase of the visitor center renovation initiative.
