Description

Fgcu's previous work has demonstrated that LEE and collier counties lose $11 million in tax revenue per month combined when red tide is present at even moderate levels. The artificial reefs in southwest florida generate $227 million annually in total economic output through fishing, diving and related activities (fuel, hotels, restaurants). The students participating in this project will gain valuable hands-on experience that will make them even more competitive in the job market. Lastly, we need to first understand how river discharges and harmful algal blooms impact our coastal ecosystems before we can develop and implement mitigation and control strategies.
