About this award

The Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded $267,000 under the Congressionally Identified Awards and Projects program to Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. This Project Grant will support the laboratory's annual Bloom education programs, which aim to strengthen linkages between middle and high school science classrooms and real-world marine issues.

Specifically, the funding will support two week-long programs - the Bloom Educators Program and Keller Bloom Student Program. The Educators Program will provide training and equipment to 10 science teachers to enhance aquatic studies in their classrooms, while the Student Program will expose 16 Maine high school juniors to STEM careers through hands-on experiences. Collectively known as "The Blooms," these annual initiatives have reached over 4,000 students to date. The period of performance is August 1, 2022 to July 31, 2023.

Description

Bigelow laboratory for ocean sciences has requested federal funding (conmunity funding) in the amount of $89,000 to support part of 2022-2023 activities for an annual program of marine education established three decades ago. Through two, free, week-long bloom programs ("bigelow laboratory orders of magnitude") over the course of one year, bigelow laboratory for ocean sciences: 1) arms 10 middle and high school science teachers with the skills and equipment they need to give their students more meaningful aquatic science experiences in school through the bloom educators program, and 2) inspires 16 maine high school juniors to pursue studies and careers in stem through the keller bloom student program. These annual programs, collectively known as "the blooms", strengthen how students and teachers link their science classrooms to real world issues like climate change, water quality, fisheries, and conservation.
