About this award
This five-year, $19.285 million project grant from the Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, under the Pacific Coast Salmon Recovery Pacific Salmon Treaty Program (CFDA #11.438), provides funding to the Idaho Species Conservation Office to support habitat restoration and monitoring projects benefitting endangered salmonids in Idaho. The award period is July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2027.
Through multiple subawards, key activities include designing and implementing instream habitat improvements on over 30 miles of streams across several watersheds; replacing fish passage barriers; monitoring juvenile salmonid populations; designing additional restoration projects; and trapping and hauling steelhead above impassable falls. Subrecipients such as the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, soil and water conservation districts, Trout Unlimited, and environmental non-profits will perform on-the-ground restoration work and monitoring to address limiting factors and improve conditions in priority spawning and rearing areas aligned with ESA recovery plans. Acquisition of a conservation easement and hydrologic analyses will further support recovery objectives. The project aims to increase capacity and viability of endangered salmon and steelhead populations across Idaho.
Description
Idaho program objectives: priority one. Habitat restoration projects selected for funding in the idaho program will address factors limiting abundance and productivity of endangered species act (ESA)-listed pacific salmonids in priority spawning and rearing habitat. Limiting factors for each population in each major population group of the snake river steelhead distinct population segment (DPS) and/or spring/summer chinook salmon and sockeye salmon evolutionarily significant units (ESU), are provided in table 5 of this document. The idaho program (idaho recovery plan) is aligned with the national marine fisheries service (nmfs) 2017 ESA recovery plan for idaho snake river spring/summer chinook salmon (oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and snake river steelhead (oncorhynchus mykiss), and the nmfs 2015 recovery plan for snake river sockeye salmon (oncorhynchus nerka). Priority two. The idaho program will consider funding projects that will provide effectiveness monitoring of habitat actions
