About this award
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded a $1,226,160 Project Grant to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife through the Pacific Coast Salmon Recovery Pacific Salmon Treaty Program (CFDA 11.438). The grant will support continued full electronic sampling for coded wire tags of Chinook and coho salmon in Oregon's ocean recreational and commercial troll fisheries from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023. Specifically, all Chinook salmon will be sampled on recreational boats and commercial troll vessels meeting a 20% sampling rate. This will maintain important coded wire tag data for managing Pacific salmon populations under the United States' responsibilities in the Pacific Salmon Treaty. As a sub-awardee, the State of Oregon will help fulfill the goals of the federal program which aims to assist states in salmon restoration and treaty obligations through July 2023.
Description
Pacific salmon treaty FY22 program in support of the below projects: sub-project 1. Oregon ocean sampling for coded wire tags in commercial troll and recreational fisheries objective 1.1. Maintain full electronic sampling for cwts of chinook and coho salmon on all ocean recreational and commercial troll salmon vessels that are sampled. Prior to 2011, sampling used electronic sampling to verify the presence/absence of cwts only in adipose FIN marked salmon. Increased releases of tagged salmon without associated adipose FIN marks have resulted in a disconnect between CWT tagging activities and ocean CWT sampling. Pending PST CWT program support, this project will continue to provide full electronic sampling of every chinook salmon on sampled recreational boats from the ocean salmon fishery, as well as on sampled commercial troll salmon vessels. Objective 1.2. Meet or exceed the 20% sampling rate for cwts from chinook and coho salmon from the ocean recreational and commercial trol
