This federal Project Grant award from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865), supports research on the function and evolution of female-expressed seminal fluid proteins (SFPs) in Drosophila melanogaster. The $124,913 award, effective from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2026, will be used to investigate: 1) the functions of female-expressed SFPs, and whether the female- and male-contributed protein fractions have the same function; and 2) how the sex-shared secreted reproductive proteins evolve, and whether the evolutionary and functional patterns better support a model of cooperation or sexual antagonism. The research will employ cutting-edge genome engineering methods, comparative genomics, and transcriptomics to address these knowledge gaps. Additionally, the project will explore whether convergently evolved gains of sperm storage in non-melanogaster Drosophila species are associated with gains of SFP expression in additional female cell types. The University of California, Davis is the prime awardee for this grant.
