- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Mayo Clinic $661,884 on July 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to develop lung ultrasound surface wave elastography (LUSWE) as a diagnostic and assessment tool for diffuse pulmonary parenchymal disease. The project aims to develop novel technology analyzing lung mass density and viscoelasticity in addition to surface wave speed to create a noninvasive screening tool for early identification of...
- The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering awarded George Mason University $265,018 on August 15, 2026, under the Discovery and Applied Research for Technological Innovations to Improve Human Health program (CFDA 93.286) to develop a disposable wearable ultrasound patch for real-time, noninvasive monitoring of cardiac output and blood pressure in neonates and infants following cardiac surgery. The project addresses the absence of continuous hemodynamic monitoring solutions...
The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering awarded The Johns Hopkins University $126,388 on September 1, 2026, under the Discovery and Applied Research for Technological Innovations to Improve Human Health program (CFDA 93.286) to develop directional beamforming auscultation technologies for enhanced diagnosis of cardiopulmonary diseases. The project introduces three innovations to advance auscultation beyond traditional stethoscopes: novel acoustic directional imaging to visualize and localize physiological sounds with spatial resolution for characterizing crackles and wheezes; a directional beamforming stethoscope system that separates overlapping heart and lung sounds by analyzing linear and angular particle velocities and acoustic phases to improve inter-annotator agreement; and a unilateral lung function test based on explainable artificial intelligence applied to directional auscultation to provide non-invasive, bedside estimates of left and right lung function without forced-air maneuvers. The three advances will be validated through laboratory phantom studies and clinical studies on pediatric and adult populations, with emphasis on adventitious crackles and wheezes, heart murmurs and diseases, and lung function assessment. Work is performed in Baltimore, Maryland. The period of performance runs from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2028. The award is classified as a Project Grant.
