Project Grant K23HL168151
- This federal Project Grant award of $709,902 from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research) aims to establish a well-characterized cohort of individuals with post-tuberculosis lung disease (PTLD) in Uganda. The key objectives are to determine whether sex, HIV serostatus, and air pollution exposure are associated with distinct lung function and chest imaging phenotypes of PTLD. The award will support the enrollment of 650 post-TB and 165 non-TB...
- This $830,261 federal Project Grant award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research program) supports research on post-tuberculosis (TB) lung disease among individuals successfully treated for TB in Lima, Peru. The project, titled "Host- and Pathogen-Specific Risk Factors for Post-Tuberculosis Lung Disease among People Successfully Treated for TB in Lima, Peru: BEAT-PTLD," will evaluate 1,000 TB patients and 291 community...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) awarded a $1,136,143 Project Grant under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research federal grant program (CFDA 93.855) to study post-tuberculosis lung disease (PTLD) in youth with and without HIV globally. The project will leverage the Tuberculosis Sentinel Research Network (TB-SRN) in 11 countries to establish the prevalence of PTLD in youth, identify modifiable risk factors, and assess the impact on quality of life....
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research) provides $2,513,201 in funding to The Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania to research excess cardiovascular inflammation in tuberculosis (TB) and HIV. The overarching hypothesis is that TB promotes pulmonary inflammation leading to subclinical vascular pathology, increasing the risk of major cardiovascular events in TB survivors. The research will investigate...
- This Project Grant award from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research Federal Grant Program (CFDA 93.855), provides $897,448 to The Johns Hopkins University to conduct research on the causality of post-tuberculosis (TB) lung disease in rural Uganda. The study aims to evaluate lung function and respiratory symptoms both before and after TB diagnosis to better understand how much post-TB sequelae reflect the TB disease...
- This $854,000 Project Grant awarded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research Federal Grant Program (CFDA 93.855), aims to assess post-tuberculosis (TB) lung disease in TB patients with and without HIV coinfection. The project will utilize novel positron emission tomography (PET) imaging techniques, such as 11C-rifampin PET, to longitudinally profile lesional characteristics and antibiotic exposures in animal models...
- This $136,718 Project Grant award from the National Institutes of Health's Fogarty International Center (CFDA 93.989 - International Research and Research Training) supports a study to investigate the long-term respiratory health impacts of pulmonary tuberculosis in children and adolescents in The Gambia. The project, led by Principal Investigator Dr. Esin Nkereuwem from the Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, aims to: 1) characterize...
- This federal Project Grant award of $761,017.00 from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research) supports research to identify and characterize human pulmonary neuroendocrine progenitor cells (NEPRs) within the distal airways and their role in airway repair and injury response. The research aims to build a foundational understanding of the anatomical distribution, molecular profiles, and functional characteristics of these rare human lung cell...
- This Project Grant award from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855), provides $446,875 to The Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania to evaluate the use of Fibroblast Activation Protein (FAP) Positron Emission Computed Tomography (FAP PET/CT) imaging to characterize lung fibrosis in adult pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) patients. The research aims to determine how changes in FAP radiographic...
- This federal Project Grant award, provided by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837), supports a research project at Brigham & Women's Hospital Inc. to better understand changes in the pulmonary vasculature and their relationship to lung parenchyma using advanced CT imaging in patients with pulmonary hypertension and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The $812,189 award, with a project period from May 1, 2025 to...
This Project Grant award from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 - Cardiovascular Diseases Research) is supporting a research project titled "Targeted Implementation of Pulmonary Rehabilitation for Post-Tuberculosis Lung Disease". The $187,461 award will be used to 1) define the clinical patterns of post-tuberculosis lung disease (PTLD) and associated outcomes to identify those most in need of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR); 2) develop a structured process for tailoring PR programs to different settings; and 3) establish the feasibility and acceptability of a tailored PR program in a high tuberculosis burden setting. The principal investigator, Dr. Navuluri, has prior experience in chronic lung disease research in Kenya and plans to leverage routinely available clinical data to characterize PTLD patterns and adapt PR delivery to address system, provider, and patient barriers. The project aims to make PR more widely available and sustainable for PTLD management in resource-limited settings.
