The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), awarded a $270,857 Project Grant (CFDA 93.213 - Research and Training in Complementary and Integrative Health) to Portland State University to establish a community-based research agenda for improving chronic pain self-management among young Black adults. The 5-year award, starting September 1, 2024, will support Dr. De'Sha Wolf, an early career social scientist, in conducting mixed methods research to: 1) determine the clinical characteristics, comorbidities, and treatments used by young Black adults for chronic pain; 2) identify their attitudes, use, and perceived effectiveness of pain self-management strategies, mind-body complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) preferences, and pain management support needs; and 3) culturally and structurally adapt the evidence-based Chronic Pain Self-Management Program (CPSMP) for this population through community collaboration. The resulting protocolized intervention will be used for a future feasibility study, aligning with NCCIH's priority on complementary and integrative pain management.
