Description
Janus women and children?s center-families in recovery project 2023-2028 - since 1996, janus has operated the only dedicated perinatal and parenting residential substance use disorder (SUD) treatment program in santa cruz county, primarily serving women and children receiving medicaid benefits. This project, with samhsa funding, ensures janus can continue to provide the full continuum of care including upstream prevention, case management and community supports, while eliminating barriers to accessing SUD treatment. Janus' current perinatal and parenting facility has 10 beds for eligible clients and up to 15 beds for children aged 0-5 residing with their mother in treatment. Almost 100% of clients are medicaid recipients, aged 18-55, 80% white, 18% hispanic and >2% identify as black, asian or native american. 80% of clients report as either unhoused or in dependent housing, only 19% report stable independent housing. 2021/2022 reported substance use disorder breakdown of our clients are: 26% alcohol, 21% heroin, 39% methamphetamines, 21% other opiates and synthetics (fentanyl) and greater than 90% of our clients experience a CO-occurring mental health disorder. A recent grant award will fund the building of a new women and children's facility serving underrepresented south santa cruz county. Currently we serve 35 women, with varying numbers of family members, per year with plans to expand capacity with a new facility to open in 2026 to 45 women annually through 2028 when we would serve 50 women, and proportionate increase in associated family members. The nearest hospital to our current facility reports 5% (+/- 43 births annually) between 2020-2022 were NAS or FAS affected. Janus' goals for this project are: 1. Enhance best practices related to integrated medical and behavioral health team SUD treatment with a goal of 100% of clients meeting regularly with medical provider for assessment, strategies and interventions include continuity of mat support, HCV/HIV education and treatment, ambulatory detox options, in custody setting mat services. 2. Enhance best practices related to mental health and trauma informed care for pregnant, postpartum, and parenting women and their families with a goal of 90% of clients having an increased ability to use safe coping mechanisms. Strategies and interventions include emdr, seeking safety, trauma informed groups and SUD counseling, interactive journaling, behavioral health screening for CO-occurring disorders. 3. Expand parenting education and support services for women with SUD and families in recovery- the goal is 100% of women and their children linked to healthcare providers and enrolled in medicaid or other insurance. Interventions include 3P parenting classes. 4. Enhance family-centered treatment components-goal of 90% of clients, their children and partners being screened with prapare, aces/pearls and ASQ 3/SE (as appropriate) and early interventions for each woman, child, and family that include behavioral health therapy offered to women, children, and circle of support. 5.
