Description
- Abstract
- Strengthening rural capacity to prevent underage alcohol use through community collaboration and youth engagement prosser thrive coalition will implement the stop act project, strengthening rural capacity to prevent underage alcohol use through community collaboration and youth engagement, to increase community capacity to prevent and reduce underage alcohol use among youth ages 12-20 in prosser, washington. Through strengthened coalition infrastructure, youth engagement, family education, and coordinated prevention strategies, the project will support healthier environments where youth can thrive and make healthy choices. The project will serve the city of prosser, a rural agricultural community located in benton county, washington, with approximately 6,366 residents and approximately 2,450 students served by prosser school district. The population benefiting from capacity building includes prosser thrive coalition, its community prevention partners, and the systems that influence youth environments, including schools, families, healthcare providers, law enforcement, local government, businesses, and youth-serving organizations. Capacity development needs include strengthening coordinated prevention planning, expanding youth and family engagement, improving community collaboration, and increasing the sustainability of environmental prevention strategies addressing underage alcohol use. The population served through expanded prevention activities will include youth ages 12-20, primarily middle and high school students, along with parents and caregivers. Youth participants will benefit from increased access to alcohol-free environments, positive peer activities, leadership opportunities, trusted adults, and prevention education. Family and community participants will benefit from prevention resources and engagement opportunities designed to strengthen communication and reinforce community norms that discourage underage drinking. Using the strategic prevention framework (SPF) and cadca's seven strategies for community change, thrive will implement capacity-building strategies including community assessment, logic model and action plan development, youth advisory engagement, cross-sector partnership coordination, evidence-informed prevention campaigns, caregiver education, and expansion of the thrive youth café as an environmental prevention strategy. Project goals are to strengthen community prevention infrastructure, increase protective factors, expand alcohol-free youth opportunities, strengthen family and community engagement, and sustain coordinated prevention efforts. Measurable objectives include: (1) completing a community assessment, logic model, and 12-month action plan within the first six months; (2) engaging youth through mustang thrive youth coalitions to provide meaningful input into prevention strategies; (3) expanding youth café prevention programming to engage at least 75 youth annually; (4) implementing parent and community prevention activities annually; and (5) monitoring changes in youth engagement, protective factors, community participation, and prevention capacity through ongoing evaluation. Through stop act funding, prosser thrive coalition will strengthen the community systems, relationships, and prevention infrastructure needed to maintain long-term reductions in underage alcohol use and support positive outcomes for youth and families.
