The Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration awarded Indiana University Indianapolis $600,000 on September 30, 2026, under the Center for Mental Health Services Projects of Regional and National Significance program (CFDA 93.532) to establish and operate the Center on Childhood Trauma and Substance Use (CCTSU). CCTSU will function as a National Treatment and Service Adaptation Center providing national capacity-building, workforce development, treatment adaptation, training, consultation, technical assistance, dissemination, stakeholder engagement, fidelity monitoring, and evaluation focused on improving trauma treatment and service delivery for children, adolescents, caregivers, and families affected by substance use-related trauma and co-occurring traumatic stress and substance use. The center will build national workforce capacity to help trauma-focused providers understand substance use disorders, reduce stigma, screen and refer effectively, and support families affected by caregiver substance use, overdose exposure, traumatic bereavement, and co-occurring conditions. The center will also help substance use professionals become more trauma-informed, developmentally responsive, and family-centered. CCTSU will reach communities nationwide, including rural and underserved communities and systems with limited integrated trauma and substance use expertise, through dissemination of evidence-based treatment resources, family-facing educational resources, and implementation of evidence-based and evidence-informed practices.
