Description

Building capacity in school based mental health services - the buckeye ranch (TBR) will build capacity in school-based mental health services by implementing dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) steps a and DBT skills as an individual counseling approach in collaboration with at least three public school systems in central ohio. Intervention will focus on youth in elementary through high school at risk of or identified as being a student with a serious emotional disturbance (SED). DBT skills have demonstrated effectiveness in helping adolescents manage difficult emotional situations, cope with stress, and make better decisions. DBT is an evidence-based model grounded in cognitive behavior. DBT encourages middle-of-the-path thinking and promotes resiliency through teaching 4 foundational skills. These skills are mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. DBT skills training for emotional problem solving for adolescents (DBT steps-a) is a social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum to be implemented in schools to teach students effective emotion regulation, decision making and problem-solving skills. Through this opportunity we intend to fill service gaps and address the needs of 100 youth per year identified as SED who are uninsured and/or underinsured for a total of 200 youth in a two year period. 70% of youth will achieve improvement in emotional regulation and management as measured on a standardized scale. Achievements through this grant opportunity will be used to inform and further develop school-based mental health services in central ohio.
