Description

Camino community center mental health awareness training - the camino community center's mental health awareness training (camino mhat) project will serve some of the fastest growing latino communities in the country, charlotte, north carolina, and surrounding counties. The state's latino population has grown by 24.6% between 2010 and 2018 per the U.S. Census bureau estimates, faster than the growth of the population nationwide (18%). The project seeks to address local barriers that reflect a national trend. Barriers include a lack of bilingual practitioners, cultural and linguistic barriers to accessing care, and significant stigma surrounding behavioral health needs and treatment in the latino community, which may deter help-seeking. The camino mhat project will provide an innovative solution using evidence-based mental health first aid training to clergy, trusted members of the community, who in turn will spread the knowledge and skills they gain across their congregations and communities. Doing so provides access to culturally sensitive, bilingual outreach and mental health support in latino communities with a faith-based congregation. The project aims to serve a minimum of 3,150 individuals over the five years of the project, with the following goals: (1) increase latino congregational and/or community support and capacity for mental health services, (2) increase mental health awareness trainings for latino congregations and communities, and (3) increase access to camino's behavioral health services.
