The National Cancer Institute (NCI) awarded a $107,948 Project Grant to The Johns Hopkins University to conduct research on comparative analysis of M-CSF and GM-CSF in human monocyte metabolic reprogramming and differentiation into tumor-associated macrophage-like cells. The project, funded under CFDA 93.398 Cancer Research Manpower, aims to characterize differences in tumor-associated macrophage (TAM) functional attributes and their regulation between M-CSF and GM-CSF, as well as investigate whether early metabolic changes induced by these cytokines in monocytes contribute to differences in TAM marker expression. The research will utilize a combination of immunology, cancer biology, genome-wide profiling, and cell metabolism techniques with human monocytes to advance the understanding of functional differences between M-CSF and GM-CSF induced TAM-like cells and potentially reveal novel metabolic mechanisms controlling TAM-associated functions, which may improve TAM-targeting cancer therapeutics. The project period runs from January 8, 2025 to August 31, 2027.
