Description

The primary purpose of the damage compensation program is to reimburse private parties for costs associated with livestock damage by publicly-owned wildlife, includingwolves. The secondary purpose of the damage compensation program is to increase public tolerance in a cohort of the public directly impacted by wolf presence on the landscape (i.e., livestock producers). In preparation for wolf delisting in 2008, the wyoming legislature adopted statutes that directed the departmentto develop a compensation program for confirmed livestock killed or injured by wolves similar to statutes alreadyin place for other trophy game animals (e.g., mountain lions, black bears, and grizzly bears). The wyoming game and fish commission revised its livestock damage compensation regulation to include wolves to comply with thestatute in 2008, and the department has been investigating and providing compensation for confirmed livestockloss caused by wolves in the wtgmas since that time. Compensation is not available for livestock loss fromwolves where they are designated as predatory animals year-round. All elements of wyomings wolf-livestockdepredation investigation and compensation program are outlined in statute, regulation and policy, which lendsitself to a robust and rigorous process for evaluating depredation and providing compensation.
