Description
The washington state parks and recreation commission (state parks) in partnership with the wild fish conservancy (WFC) is requesting $1,000,000 of national coastal wetlands conservation grant (ncwcg) funds for the twanoh shoreline restoration project. The project was first identified in the may 2012 puget sound nearshore ecosystem restoration project conceptual design report. The currently proposed phase will remove 1600 feet of shoreline armoring and fill restoring and enhancing 6.79 acres of intertidal wetland. IT will replace an undersizedpedestrian bridge with a larger span, and place coarse woody debris in the creek and along the shoreline. IT willalso restore regular tidal influence to a pocket lagoon. These actions will normalize habitat creating processesallowing the creek to meander, improving sediment delivery and sorting on the beach face, and increasing tidalexchange and reducing water temperatures in the lagoon. These processes will improve habitat for spawning foragefish, a critical link the puget sound food chain, as well as improved rearing habitat for juvenile salmonids andmany other species. Furthermore restoring process, not just habitat elements themselves, makes for a moreresilient project able to adapt and shift over time in response to climate change and other environmentalvariables.
