Description
The pyramid lake fisheries (PLF) is delegated authority to operate, service, and maintain the pyramid lake fisheryproduction and all of the natural attributes associated with the biological ecosystem in accordance with the pyramid lakefishery conservation plan of 1992. The production levels for the endemic CUI-UI fish and the lahontan cutthroat trout(LCT) are limited by a number of historical actions that have altered the natural life cycles of the CUI-UI and LCT, andthrough to today human actions continue to alter the natural life cycles of the pyramid lake fishery. The CUI-UI and lctboth have recovery plans that contain criteria and objectives that are aimed at restoration and recovery effort for the lowertruckee river and pyramid lake. Each recovery plan contains merit criteria for brood stock operations as an importantcomponent to the recovery and restoration of the CUI-UI and LCT. The PLF is responsible for the successful propagation of the endangered CUI-UI and threatened lahontan cutthroat trout(LCT) fish of pyramid lake. To maintain and achieve LCT spawning success, proper facilities are required to serve eachphase of rearing LCT from spawning to release. Certain rearing pools are utilized for necessary pyramid lake acclamationand the pools utilized for this purpose are aged and worn from which replacement is the viable and feasible option forcontinued use for this stage of rearing. The pools are used during the final stage of rearing LCT to acclimate the fish topyramid lake water prior to being released or stocked in pyramid lake. This step is important to experience increasedviability for LCT survival. This proposed objective will replace six aged and worn pools that will provide efficient function tothe rearing process. The propagation and rearing of CUI-UI (pronounced kooyoo EE) has experienced challenges over time with the PLF effort tomaintain success with CUI-UI spawning production. The big bend CUI-UI rearing facility is an operation that has becomelimited due to the size of the well and pump at the facility. The well and pump can produce approximately 30 gallons perminute. The operation is adjusted and altered because of the limited water flow and increase in production requires the welloutput to 60 gallons per minute. As an endangered species, the propagation is performed at the truckee river that providesthe natural release of hatched larvae directly to the river. This proposed objective will increase the well output to 60 gallonsper minute intended to bringing the facility to full operation.
