Description
The projects purposes are to respond to invasive fish occurrences, monitor zebra mussel presence, and develop and implement strategies to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive plants and animals in maine inland waters. The overall purpose is to reduce the spread of invasive aquatic organisms in maine and protect freshwater native plant and animal habitat. Activities to be performed include: 1. Monitoring for zebra mussel, which have not been found in maine, and developing a robust program to manage invasive fish and 2. Developing an outreach campaign to limit the spread of invasive aquatic plants and animals in maine. One expected outcome is to increase the ability of state biologists to respond to illegal stocking of invasive fish species and to detect zebra mussel before they establish. A second outcome is an effective outreach program to promote spread prevention in maine through the clean, drain dry approach. The second outcome will require developing strategies that lead boaters and other lake visitors to inspect boats and gear even if no inspector is present. Intended beneficiaries are all users and managers of inland waters in maine.
