About this award
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service awarded a $130,000 Project Grant under the Fish and Aquatic Conservation - Aquatic Invasive Species (CFDA 15.608) program to the Nevada Department of Wildlife. The purpose of the grant is to prepare an update to the Lake Tahoe Region Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Management Plan, which provides a strategic framework for preventing, detecting, and responding to aquatic invasive species in the Lake Tahoe region shared by Nevada and California. The grant will fund activities such as updating plan appendices, conducting a tabletop rapid response exercise, and closely coordinating AIS management efforts with California and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, which has oversight responsibility. This update is warranted due to the recent discovery of New Zealand mudsnails in Lake Tahoe. The grant project will run from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2026.
Description
Goals, objectives, strategies, and actions described within AIS management plans implement the broad framework of a national aquatic nuisance species program and support the aquatic nuisance species task force mission. The last update was prepared in 2014 and with the discovery of new zealand mudsnails in september 2023, an update is warranted. Included appendices of the plan will be updated, along with conducting a table-top rapid response exercise. The tahoe regional planning agency (trpa) is the responsible entity for implementing actions identified in the plan.lake tahoe is a shared waterbody within the states of nevada and california, that has regulatory oversight by thetahoe regional planning agency (trpa). Trpa was created by the two states and ratified by the united statescongress under the tahoe regional planning compact in 1969 (public law 96-551). The state of nevada workscooperatively with trpa on aquatic invasive species issues and is a chartered member of the lake tahoe aquaticinvasive species coordinating committee (ltaiscc). The ltaiscc was formed to provide strategic direction for the implementation of the lake tahoe region aquatic invasive species management plan (the plan), which was approved by the aquatic nuisance species task force in 2009, and subsequently approved a plan revision in 2014. The plan complements the california state aquatic nuisance species (ANS) plan and the nevada ANS plan. Implementation of the plan is closely coordinated with the ANS leads of both states to ensure collaborative and complementary efforts. The tahoe regional planning agency (trpa) is the designated lead for oversight and the fiscal agent for the plan.
