About this award

This federal Project Grant award from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Fish and Aquatic Conservation - Aquatic Invasive Species (CFDA 15.608) program provides $115,000 to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MN DNR) to expand an existing stationary acoustic telemetry array to track invasive carp in the Mississippi River.

The project will install up to 60 additional acoustic telemetry receivers in Pools 5A-12 of the Mississippi River, allowing the MN DNR and partner agencies (Wisconsin DNR, USFWS, USGS) to better detect and monitor the movement patterns of tagged invasive carp. This data will help identify optimal locations to install deterrents and assess the effectiveness of existing deterrents to support more targeted invasive carp management actions. The award runs from October 1, 2024 through December 31, 2026.

Description

FY24 expanded stationary receiver array in pools 5A 12 partner agencies including minnesota department of natural resources (DNR), wisconsin DNR, USFWS, and USGS tag and track invasive carp to identify their movement patterns. These patterns can be exploited to target removal efforts. They can also be analyzed to determine the best locations to install deterrents, or to assess effectiveness of existing deterrents. In this project, minnesota DNR and wisconsin DNR will install up to 60 additional acoustic telemetry receivers to detect tagged invasive carp in mississippi river pools 5A-12. DNR crews will install, maintain, and download data from the array in 2025. USFWS and USGS will provide in-kind support for installation, maintenance, and data processing. The data will be shared among partners via an online database known as fishtracks. The movement patterns that are identified will be used to more effectively target management actions.
