About this award
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service awarded a $600,000 Project Grant to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) under the Fish and Aquatic Conservation - Aquatic Invasive Species (CFDA 15.608) federal grant program. The purpose of the grant is to continue UDWR's efforts to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species, specifically quagga and zebra mussels, throughout Utah's water bodies and the western states. Specifically, the grant funding will be used to develop a 47th permanent mandatory inspection and decontamination station in Kanab, Utah, as well as provide adequate technician coverage at the existing stations located at the north and south ends of Lake Powell and the I-15 Port of Entry in St. George, Utah. The Kanab station will serve as a secondary line of defense for the rest of the state from Lake Powell and support the existing containment program operating at Wahweap. The grant period runs from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2026.
Description
The utah division of wildlife resources (udwr) aquatic invasive species (AIS) program mission is to prevent the spread of AIS, specifically quagga and zebra mussels, throughout utah water bodies as well as the western states. Lake powell is utah s only mussel infested body of water. Udwr, alongside the national park service, operates permanent inspection and decontamination stations at the wahweap boat launch and the bullfrog boat launch, on the north and south ends of the lake. Udwr has proven to be a front runner in the fight against quagga and zebra mussels and this project intends to continue that trend with further development of its 47TH permanent mandatory inspection and decontamination station in kanab, utah, as well as continue to provide adequate technician coverage at both the north and south ends of lake powell and the i-15 port of entry in ST. George, utah. The kanab station will provide a secondary line of defense for the rest of the state from lake powell and serve as a backup to the existing containment program that operates at wahweap.
