About this award

The U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service awarded Pronatura Noroeste, a Mexican non-profit conservation organization, a $7,291,187 Project Grant under the North American Wetlands Conservation Fund (CFDA 15.623) program for the 2024-2026 grant cycle. The funding supports Pronatura Noroeste's efforts to protect and improve migratory waterfowl and shorebird habitat in northwest Mexico, a critical non-breeding region for shorebirds along the Pacific Americas Flyway. Key activities include regular monitoring of waterfowl and shorebird populations, habitat management and conservation, policy advocacy for shorebird protection, research to improve understanding of shorebirds and their habitats, and capacity building for conservation partners. The grant will also enable Pronatura Noroeste to develop climate change strategies and integrate them into their site conservation plans to address the growing threats to migratory bird populations.

Description

For the past six years, pronatura noroeste, PNO has implemented the pacific americas shorebird conservation strategy, pascs, a guiding document outlining the coordinated hemispheric actions required to restore shorebird populations and protect priority shorebird habitat. This effort, coupled with the nawca continuous support, has yielded PNO and its partners successful results in reducing anthropogenic threats for migratory waterfowl and shorebirds, conserving their habitats, and creating alliances to implement coordinated waterfowl and shorebird conservation actions at the local, national, and hemispheric scale. However, despite effectively implementing the pascs, shorebird populations are still declining, partly because of the combined effects of climate change at other parts of their annual cycle, that exacerbate the pressures exerted on shorebirds in NW mexico. PNO recognizes that reversing ongoing shorebird declines requires not only a long-term commitment to continue implementing the pascs, but also to address the pressing and complex concerns imposed by a changing climate.during the 2024-2026 grant cycle, we will continue to protect and improve waterfowl shorebird habitat in NW mexico, the most important non-breeding region for shorebirds in the entire pacific americas flyway. We will focus on developing our climate change strategy and incorporating IT into our site conservation plans. At the governmental level, we will continue promoting the insertion of shorebird conservation and their habitats into public policy, management plans, land use plans, and other federal, state, or municipal instruments. This proposal combines actions at local, regional, national, and continental scales. These actions include regular monitoring of waterfowl shorebirds populations and priority wetlands, managing and conserving their habitat and watersheds, promoting conservation constituencies, forming alliances across various sectors and countries, ensuring compliance and enforcement, developing policies for environmental and wildlife protection, conducting field research to improve our understanding of shorebirds and their habitat, building the capacity of our partners and stakeholders for conservation and management.
