About this award

This $600,000 federal Project Grant awarded by the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service under the Fish and Wildlife Management Assistance program (CFDA 15.608) supports the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources' (UDWR) ongoing efforts to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species, specifically quagga and zebra mussels, throughout Utah water bodies and the Western U.S. Funding will enable UDWR to establish a 47th permanent mandatory inspection and decontamination station in Kanab, Utah, which will serve as a secondary line of defense against mussels spreading from the infested Lake Powell. The grant will also provide continued technician coverage at the existing containment stations at Lake Powell and the I-15 Port of Entry in St. George, Utah. Through this award, UDWR will sustain its frontrunner role in the fight against invasive mussels and protect water resources across the region.

Description

The utah division of wildlife resources (udwr) aquatic invasive species (AIS) program mission is to prevent the spread of AIS, specifically quagga and zebra mussels, throughout utah water bodies as well as the western states. Lake powell is utahs only mussel infested body of water. Udwr, alongside the national park service, operates permanent inspection and decontamination stations at the wahweap boat launch and the bullfrog boat launch, on the north and south ends of the lake. Udwr has proven to be a frontrunner in the fight against quagga and zebra mussels and this projects intends to continue that trend with the development of its 47TH permanent mandatory inspection and decontamination station in kanab, utah, as well as continue to provide adequate technician coverage at both the north and south ends of lake powell and the i-15 port of entry in ST george, utah. The kanab station will provide a secondary line of defense for the rest of the state from lake powell and serve as a backup to the existing containment program that operates at wahweap.
