THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO ENHANCE 2,378 ACRES OF CRITICAL WETLAND HABITAT WITH HISTORICAL WILD RICE BEDS THAT ARE LOCATED WITHIN THE CEDED TERRITORY OF WISCONSIN. NORTHERN WILD RICE (ZIZANIA PALUSTRIS) IS CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF THE MOST VULNERABLE PLANT SPECIES IN THE UPPER MIDWEST, WHICH IS WHY IT IS A MAIN THEME OF THIS PROPOSAL. THROUGH THE ENHANCEMENT OF THESE WETLAND SITES, WE CAN PROMOTE HEALTHY AND DYNAMIC SHALLOW AND DEEP AQUATIC PLANT COMMUNITIES TO IMPROVE THE ABUNDANCE AND HABITAT CONDITIONS FOR WILD RICE. WATERFOWL, INCLUDING MALLARD, RING-NECKED DUCK, WOOD DUCK, BLUE-WINGED TEAL, CANADA GOOSE AND TRUMPETER SWANS, WILL DIRECTLY BENEFIT FROM THE HABITAT THIS SPECIES PROVIDES DURING THE BREEDING AND MIGRATION SEASONS. IN ADDITION, THE PROPOSED WORK WILL MITIGATE FLOODING AND INCREASE WATER QUALITY AT BOTH THE SURFACE AND GROUND LEVEL.
