Description

A model for predicting rusty patched bumble BEE (bombus affinis) occurrences in the great lakes region based on habitat characteristics, land cover, abiotic, and other descriptive data in areas of positive and negative rusty patched bumble BEE occurrence is produced to assist in prioritizing rusty patched bumble BEE (bombus affinis) survey efforts. Model parameters incorporate recommendations from U.S. Fish and wildlife service staff in collaboration with bumble BEE experts. In subsequent years, qualified biologists test the model through survey efforts where rusty patched bumble BEE are not known to occur but predicted by the model; at least 15 sites are surveyed with low (5 sites), moderate (5 sites), or high (5 sites) probability of occupancy. The model is refined and retested based on survey results. In all cases, field surveys follow USFWS survey protocols for the rusty patched bumble BEE (bombus affinis) version 2.2, rapid survey protocol to expedite sampling and cover as much area as possible. Limited occurrence and distribution information of rusty patched bumble BEE throughout the great lakes region creates a challenge for land managers, but once composed a predictive model for rusty patched bumble BEE could significantly support the overall conservation goals of the great lakes restoration initiative and U.S. Fish & wildlife service.
