Overview This Statement of Work (SOW) describes the contribution of Stefan Knirck's group at Harvard University to the QuantiSED 2.0 proposal entitled "Accelerating High Mass Axion Searches Using Kinetic Inductance Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifiers", led by PI Paul Szypryt at University of Colorado. Funds provided under the corresponding subcontract from University of Colorado to Harvard University will be used to reimburse Harvard University for the cost of the research described in the proposal. Scope of Work The University of Colorado will provide quantum sensors such as KI-TWPAs to be implemented in axion dark matter searches developed by the Harvard group. Harvard University Assistant Professor Stefan Knirck will supervise the work of a Harvard University graduate student on the development of an experiment to search for axion dark matter particles using photon sensors such as KI-TWPAs provided by the University of Colorado Through this grant, the University of Colorado will provide funds through this proposal to Harvard University to cover 12 months/year of the effort of a graduate student over a period of the three years, and 0.5 month/year faculty summer salary for Stefan Knirck over the period of three years as outlined in the budget. Scientists from University of Colorado will work closely with the Harvard group to aid the implementation of their sensors in the experiments. The work will include the implementation of the KI-TWPA in axion dark matter search experiments, the operation of the experiment at Harvard and the analysis and publication of data. The KI-TWPAs will be implemented in a version of BREAD (Broadband Reflector Experiment for Axion Detection) or similar experiment in order to demonstrate instantaneous broadband sensitivity to dark photon and/or axion-like particles with better sensitivity than attainable with commercial HEMT amplifiers. Compatibility of the KI-TWPAs with the high magnetic field environment can be tested in situ. The goal is to use a KI-TWPA close to an existing design in the frequency range of about10-14GHz in Y2 of the proposal, and test a second device for higher frequencies in Y3. Work will be performed in the labs of Stefan Knirck at Harvard with support of the team from University of Colorado. Harvard will provide facilities and equipment as outlined in the facilities and equipment statements to perform the work described. Schedule Stefan Knirck's laboratory will be in a built-up phase in calendar year 2025 and work closely with the Colorado team to identify needs for the implementation in axion experiments during this time. Work on implementing the KI-TWPAs into axion experiments will be performed in 2026 and 2027.
