The Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District (METRO) received a $20,381,950 federal Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Buses and Bus Facilities Formula, Competitive, and Low or No Emissions Programs (CFDA 20.526) to replace 12 aging diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG) buses with 12 new hydrogen fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs). The funding will also support the construction of a mobile hydrogen fueling station and facility upgrades to accommodate the new buses, as well as maintenance training and workforce development. The project is expected to reduce energy consumption by 6,567 gigajoules annually and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 614 metric tons per year, contributing to METRO's goal of converting 100% of its fleet serving Watsonville's high-density corridors to zero-emission vehicles by 2027.
