THIS PROJECT WILL FOCUS ON DEVELOPING TWO MULTICOUNTY FOOD SHEDS WITHIN NORTH CAROLINA LEVERAGING A STATEWIDE NETWORK OF FOOD COUNCILS AND THEIR REGIONAL COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENT COG PARTNERS TO ASSESS AND CULTIVATE REGIONAL FOOD VALUE CHAINS. THE CORE ACTIVITIES INVOLVE ANALYZING EXISTING AND EMERGING ECONOMIC DRIVERS TO SUPPORT FARMERS PROCESSORS AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS INVOLVED IN REGIONAL FOOD SYSTEMS. NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY WILL WORK WITH FOOD COUNCILS TO CONDUCT COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND ADVOCACY WHILE COGS WILL PROVIDE CRITICAL SUPPORT THROUGH REGIONAL DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS CONNECTING THESE EFFORTS TO LOCAL GOVERNMENT INITIATIVES. THE ANTICIPATED OUTCOME IS A ROBUST FOUNDATION FOR INCREASED INVESTMENT IN FOOD VALUE CHAIN DEVELOPMENT WITH A PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON ELEVATING RURAL ASSETS AND FOSTERING VIBRANT REGIONAL FOOD CHAINS. THIS PROJECT DIRECTLY BENEFITS FARMERS AND CONSUMERS BY PROMOTING THE VIABILITY OF LOCAL FOOD SYSTEMS AND BY STREAMLINING THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN PRODUCERS AND MARKETS. THROUGH THIS WORK NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY AIMS TO CREATE A STATEWIDE STRUCTURE TO SUPPORT FOOD COUNCILS COORDINATE REGIONAL SUMMITS FOR COMPARISON AND ACTION AND ENHANCE THE OVERALL ECONOMIC STRENGTH OF NORTH CAROLINAS FOOD SECTOR.
