About this award

The Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families awarded $100,000 to Kin Support Program - HAA Yaitx'u Saiani on August 31, 2026, under the Social Services Research and Demonstration program (CFDA 93.647).

Services include cooperative family decision-making outside adversarial court processes, support for parents working toward recovery to enable safe child reunification, positive Indigenous parenting classes, and inter-generational family activities. The program grounds its work in Southeast Alaska's traditions of relative caregiving and operates in partnership with regional tribes and tribal courts.

Place of performance is Alaska. The period of performance runs from August 31, 2026, through August 30, 2027.

Description

KIN support program - HAA yatx'u saani - relative caregivers supports for southeast alaska - the KIN support program - HAA yátx'u saaní is a nonprofit in southeast alaska that helps families in which grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other relatives are raising children whose parents cannot. Across alaska, about one in twenty children is being raised by a relative other than a parent. With this funding, the KIN support program will provide informal kinship families services to keep the family healthy and stable, and prevent unnecessary family separation. We do this through a small team of family specialists and two attorneys. The KIN support program lets families make decisions cooperatively rather than through adversarial court fights, and IT supports parents working toward recovery so that, when IT is safe, children can return home. The program is grounded in southeast alaska's longstanding traditions of relative caregiving, and IT works in partnership with tribes and tribal courts across the region. IT also offers positive indigenous parenting classes and brings families together for inter-generational activities.
