About this award

This Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Railroad Administration (CFDA 20.326 - Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail) provides $41,765,000 to the New Jersey Transit Corporation (NJ Transit) to rehabilitate Platform D at the Newark Penn Station in Newark, NJ.

The project will repair and replace the platform slabs and joints, reconstruct the platform edges, install new tactile strips and timber rub rails, and upgrade the overhead canopy and lighting. This will improve passenger movements and safety for both Amtrak and NJ Transit customers by reducing congestion and boarding/alighting delays. The award has an ultimate completion date of April 30, 2030.

Description

The existing platform is in poor condition, with portions of the platform closed to passenger access. The project includes repairing and or replacing platform d slabs and joints, reconstructing platform edges, installing new tactile strips and timber RUB rails, repairing the overhead canopy and upgrading lighting. Amtrak and NJ transit trains operate on tracks 3 and 4 at platform d. Approximately 100 amtrak high-speed and conventional intercity trains stop at platform d daily. Track 3 is typically used by outbound amtrak trains from NYC, though outbound NJ transit northeast corridor line express trains will often use this track in the evening rush hours. Track 4 is typically used by westbound NJ transit trains traveling via rahway, NJ. The platform restoration will improve passenger movements and safety for both amtrak and new jersey transit customers by reducing congestion points where passengers board and alight and reduce dwell times for trains by utilizing the restored and reopened sections of the platform.
